Mind Maps were "invented" by Tony Buzan.   His TV series and book "Use  Your Head" started the mind mapping process in 1974.   Since then he  has published many more books on Mind Mapping and provides  consultancy to major businesses and organisations.   Here is a link to a   YouTube video by Tony Buzan talking about mind mapping.
I have never met Tony but after reading "Use Your Head" whilst on garden leave from Unilever in 1995, I have been using mind maps nearly every day since then.
I wish I had known about them in 1962 when I attended my first school.  What a difference it would have made to the way I learnt.  Fortunately  mind mapping is now part of the UK's National Curriculum as a learning  tool.
