The web export in MindManager has not changed for more than a decade. Every now and again you find a user who is exploiting it for the intended purposes: Sharing the content of your maps with non-MindManager users.

My training client has a “template” map for capturing knowledge which is used by many members of one group. They each edit and add all the relevant information to their maps and then export via a common template. Their audience can accesses the map contents via a familiar interface on their network drives or intranet with no need for a web server. Their maps have 50-100 or more topics (the index) with notes (the web pages).

They have adapted the dynamic outline web export template to suit their case. They use tables and images in topic notes which are not supported by the Flash Mindjet Viewer. They are also discoverying the awkward edges around controlling tables, Excel ranges, getting the Gantt view in the export and displaying task information. Some work arounds were proposed.

Fortunately the recent Service Pack for MindManager 2012 Professional has fixed the removing of spaces in topic text (it worked fine in MindManger 9 and before) but this aspect of MindManager deserves more attention from Mindjet.

If you need help sharing your maps via the web export, please contact me. Take an online session to get going or as I have done with other clients a series of sessions, coaching them on their customised web export development.

Mindjet has acquired Thinking Space the Android mind mapping application.

I have been using Thinking Space for more than a year on my HTC Wildfire. It is a competent app: great for taking notes, brainstorming on the go, transferring files between Android and PC, and viewing maps of knowledge that you have created in MindManager. The smart phone screen is a bit small for mind mapping but on an Android tablet, Thinking Space offers more features than some of its counterparts on the iPad.

If you are an Andoid tablet user I highly recommend it. Especially now it’s free as Mindjet for Android. More info at Mindjet’s blog: Mindjet for Android is here.

Here is a blog I wrote a year ago about using Thinking Space to take notes and then further process with MindManager: Making the Most of LinkedIn and Thinking Space.

I wonder how this app will develop?

The main issues for me have not been Connect but loss of functions in the desktop product which I have been using for years. I am pleased to report “verified by me” fixes to these problems in quick inital tests:

Fail – It still removes spaces from your web export Topic Notes text anymore.
<del>Pass</del> Fail – The Right click topic > Send to new map is working for PC based maps (not checked Connect ones) Problem occured 6/12/2011
Fail – The Quick Access Toolbar – image export icon is still an Adobe PDF icon!
Pass – The Windows Arrange tool behaves as you would expect. Click a map and it opens.

And the Quick Access Toolbar is reset to the default as per previous service packs.

Any good news for you?

Yes – if you install the Photon Browser. Click the Flash button in the toolbar prior to loading the page with flash in it and this browser switches to an image relaying service. You can load the Files page but before opening a map, tap the flash icon. The page is browsed by Photon’s computer and the image relayed to your device. I did not see any reduction in the speed of browsing or image quality (once I increased the bandwidth setting to 3).

Why would you when there is a Mindjet Connect app for the ipad / iPhone? Because the browser has more functionality and will display more content from your desktop maps.

Of course you need to be online for this to work.
