How do you use Mindjet mobile apps, Connect and MindManager 2012

This my understanding supported by some experimentation.

I think the free mobile versions need to be online to access and create maps. They use Connect as their file store.

You can connect to the Connect file store from MindManager 2012. You have the choice of storing maps there or on your local/network drives and of course making copies (I would).

Either application can edit maps stored on Connect. You can also share 2 maps at a time with others for editing. You can let other users view but not edit all the maps on Connect.

However I have experienced maps being locked from editing when I think shouldn’t be and problems with saving maps after editing.

Mindjet say the take up of the free products has exceeded their expectations and they are addressing the issues this has raised.

  1. I am trialling MindManager 2012. I have a problem the problem you refer to with synchronising maps in Connect Free between desktop and iPhone 4S.

    Here is my workflow:-

I create a map in MM 2012 on the PC and save it in Connect.

    I put Connect off-line.

I open the map in my Connect account on iPhone.

The map is identical to the one created on the PC in MM 2012 but it shows as being “locked” – I believe I am supposed to “check in” the map on the PC but the “check in” and “check out” buttons are greyed out (inactive)

if I edit the map on the iPhone and click on “files” to go back a step, it usually says you are trying to save to a read-only file and it prompts you to give it a new name.

So the synchronisation from the desktop to the iPhone usually works quite well but syncs from edits on the iPhone to the desktop don’t work for me.

  2. Hi Peter

I have seen many topics with similar problems in the Mindjet Community. There are 194 topics on “< href="http://community.mindjet.com/mindjet/searches?query=sync+ipad+iphone&x=0&y=0&style=topics">sync ipad iphone“. So you are not alone.

I suggest you add your comments to a relevant topic there or start a new one and log the problem with .

Personally I use Thinking Space on Android and iThoughts HD on iPad sharing files with MindManager 2012 via DropBox. Connect has failed me to often. I am waiting to see evidence that it is both realiable personal multi-platform and a team collaboration tool. :(

Sorry that I cannot be of more help.

  3. Hi Andrew

Your iThoughts on iPad sharing files with MindManger 2012 via Dropbox sounds interesting and presumably, more reliable. Have you blogged on the workflow involved? (I’ll look through this FAQ blog to find out).

What I’d like to do is to manage tasks better. I use advanced task management in Outlook 2012 but am getting fed up with the flat, list based approach of managing tasks in Outlook.

What I’d like to do is to be able share a MindManager 2012 task overview map such that I can view it on the iPhone (I have iThoughts on the iPhone too) and add to it if and when a new set of tasks occurs to me when I’m out and about (which is often when a new set of tasks comes to mind!).

I’ve previously set up Dropbox sharing in iThoughts but doesn’t the use of Dropbox mean that I have to manually download the iPhone – updated map back to my PC when back in the office? If so, it would appear that the advantage of Dropbox is its reliability but the disadvantage is the need to do manual uploading/downloading of maps which, strictly speaking, isn’t true synchronisation like Connect purports to offer.

    Thanks

    Peter

    • Hi Peter

      The workflow is very simple.

When you install Dropbox on your PC it creates a My Dropbox folder.
I replicate folders in there with the same structure as my PC folders e.g. G:\Andrew\Documents\Cabre\Clients has a mirrored folder G:\Andrew\Documents\My Dropbox\Cabre\Clients. I create folders and files in Dropbox as and when required either on the PC or in iThoughtsHD.

      Here is the iThoughtsHD workflow

Indeed I discovered that there was a Dropbox application for the PC after I wrote my previous post last night.

I’ve now set up with a “daily capture” mind map plus a Gyronix – linked capture mind map in a Mindjet folder in Dropbox and find that any edits on my iPhone Mind Manager app show up nicely when I re-open the maps in Mind Manager 9 and in a much more robust fashion than was the case with the Connect cloud system.

I’m opting to use the iPhone Mind Manager app rather than the more fully – featured ithoughts app as I find that when viewing a map in iThoughts created by Mind Manager 9, some of the nice formatting seems to be stripped away whereas the “look and feel” of the original map seems to be better preserved when viewing with the iPhone Mind Manager app.

Thanks for all your valued help.

    • Hi Peter

Gald to be of service and pleased to see you found a benefit to using the Mindjet iPhone App. I hope it will be quickly improved so it can be become most people’s first choice for mobile mind mapping when your principal application is MindManager on the desktop.

      Andrew
