Hans Terhurne of Creamatics talks to Liam Hughes of Biggerplate

Monday, October 31st, 2011

Two of my friends in the MindManager fraternity discussing Hans’s involvement in mapping over 35 years. I particularly like the crowd and cloud mapping concepts which I would be pleased to arrange in the UK or on the web. It will be an “elegantly steal”.

Little known fact: My first face to face meeting with Hans lasted 3 days.  It was at a music festival in Alverstoke, Gosport. We hardly talked about mapping.

We’re not promoting any particular software packages or cloud solutions. We’re software agnostic!

What interests us is visual management approaches that really help drive performance improvement, creativity and productivity.

My iPad has arrived

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

It was an impulse purchase, driven by seeing and reading about everyone having great fun with this sliver of a tablet computer. I am typing this with the fingers of my left hand because that where the space on my desktop is and as a penance.

I have installed iThoughtsHD, Mindjet for iPad, Hootsuite, Facebook and WordPress so far. Which leaves at least iMindMap, MindMeister, Evernote, Dropbox to get.

Browsing is very quick. More news when I have tried a few things out.

A request to publish my “Six Thinking Hats Process” map

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

I recently received a request to use my “Six Thinking Hats Process” map in an educational publication.  That was a nice compliment but looking at the map on my old web site I realise it’s time to revise the map and incorporate it in the new Cabre web site.

The shortly to be replaced page is missing the link to the book Six Thinking Hats by its creator Edward de Bono but you will find it in my mind mapping and related subjects library.

Chris Griffiths the CEO at Think Buzan has written a book about the process of solving problems.

The inputs are:

  • Generative
  • Reactive

  • Selective
  • Proactive

Apply these to the GRASP the Solution system and you will be able to:

  • Define
  • Generate
  • Evaluate
  • And get a Solution

If you run the process inside a mind mapping software environment, you will get surprisingly fast and effective results.  Of course Chris and his co-author Melina Costi have illustrated the book with many iMindMap examples.

Take a look at the GRASP The Solution: How to find the best answers to everyday challenges

Cabre’s “Sources of MindManager Knowledge” gets critiqued by Chuck Frey

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

Mind map analysis: MindManager resources map

Chuck Frey’s Mind Mapping Software Blog has an “Insiders Club” where amongst many activities Chuck critiques mind maps. This October unknown to me he critiqued Cabre’s map ”Sources of MindManager Knowledge”.  Fortunately I noticed my friend Maurice Poole‘s retweet and had a look  (I suspect Chuck has told me somewhere and I have missed it).  The critique comes in the form of a well presented PDF.

Revealing Chuck’s criticism’s would not be appropriate but I did get 5 out of 7 positive remarks. The 2 negative criticisms were justified and I will update the map accordingly.

You can get the map from BiggerplateSources of MindManager Knowledge.

I created a new map in Connect but I can’t rename the file?

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

This is what happens for me in the Mindmanager 2012 Desktop Client:

When I open a New Map, right click the map name and then Rename, my typing is not changing the name!

Open the map edit the Central Topic or add a topic and “Save” the map.

Return to the Mindjet Connect Manager window and the map Rename works. :)

How do you invite new users to your Connect account or a map?

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

This is what happened for me:

  1. In MindManager 2012 Connect desktop client Sharing > Contacts did not open a web page in Firefox, my default browser.  It did in Internet Explorer.  A friend reports it does work for them in Firefox. Maybe I am blocking some functionality with my Firefox settings.
  2. I added a new contact in the Mindjet Connect browser > Contacts page.  It was not available to me in MindManager 2012 Connect desktop client.
  3. I had to repeat the addition of the new contact in the MindManager 2012 Connect desktop client by right clicking the map and using + Share With a New Person. After filling in the screen for the contact and clicking OK there is no new visible contact. But when you press Share, the email to the contact appears.
  4. I am now waiting for my new contact to join me on the map. And they have. :)
  5. When I added a second contact with the process given in 3. They appeared in the list immediately and I felt reassured that I had entered the information correctly.

What happens for you?
